This is a standard French Model of 1842 Short Artillery Rifled Musket with a back action lock, just received out of a large collection. These were imported in large numbers by the Confederate States during the Civil war, which is probably how it ended up in the United States. It is fully steel mounted and does bear a faint maker marking on the lock plate: Mre R'le de Maubeuge, indicating manufacture at the Royal
